Pune Overview
Pune, once the center of Maratha Empire is situated 560 meters above sea level on the banks of river Mula and Mutha rivers. Originally called as "Punawadi", Pune existed as a town since 937 AD. Pune is the eighth largest city in India. Pune city became the center of Indian politics during the reign of Peshwa rule. The city was known as "monsoon capital" of Bombay Presidency until India got Independence. The city also has pleasant climate throughout the year and hence attracts major tourists from worldwide. The city is well known for classical music, theater, sports, literature and spirituality therefore, Pune is famously known as cultural capital of Maharashtra. Marathi is the official spoken language, however Hindi and English languages is also spoken and understood.
